What are you able to change about my nose, and how do you do it?

The methods and techniques for nose jobs have come a long way! It’s easier than ever to help patients achieve the look and function they want most. Patients come with a variety of goals, and Dr. Houser and Dr. Kraft’s first step is always to listen carefully to what a patient hopes to achieve. They’ll give honest and realistic feedback so that no one makes a decision without being fully informed of what’s possible—and not possible—when it comes to their individual nasal and facial structure.

Rhinoplasty techniques most often fall into two categories, open and closed. This simply refers to a difference in the number and types of incisions needed. When a patient mostly wants to improve their profile and create a change at the bridge or hump of the nose, the closed approach is often taken and incisions will only be made inside the nose. If a patient seeks to improve airflow, that may also require a break to the nasal bones and the insertion of temporary splints to force a change to the bone structure. Dr. Houser and Dr. Kraft will also assess the need for cartilage grafting for patients seeking breathing improvements.

If a patient wants to create change at the tip of the nose, for example to make it less boxy, or if a change to the nostrils is desired, an open surgical approach is required. Incisions will be made inside the nose, as well as to the columella, the thin strip of skin extending from the upper lip to the tip of the nose. Patients who want to alter the look of their nasolabial folds in the nostril area, may choose to add an injectable procedure. Injectable options include Juvederm® Ultra or Juvederm Ultra Plus and Juvederm Vollure. Alternatively, patients can have fat from another area of their body removed and injected instead. Fat transfer is a common choice because it’s easily harvested from just about anywhere on the body, leaves minimal scarring, and eliminates the risk of allergic reaction.

Some patients come to Columbus Cosmetic in need of “revision rhinoplasty,” which is a repair to a previous nose job. While these procedures can be more complicated and time consuming, Dr. Houser and Dr. Kraft are skilled and educated on the various methods for correcting failed surgeries.

What is recovery like and will it be really obvious that I’ve had a nose job?

One of Dr. Houser and Dr. Kraft’s favorite elements of their work is the variation in patients’ goals for their procedures. Some patients want a dramatic change to their look and don’t mind at all if people can detect that cosmetic surgery has been obtained. Other people prefer to keep their choice to have plastic surgery private. We have found that in most cases, rhinoplasty patients return to work or school and find that, although people around them know something is different, they often can’t quite figure out what’s changed. Dr. Houser and Dr. Kraft do a great job finding that special point at which someone’s appearance has been improved tremendously, but not at the loss of the unique characteristics that keep them recognizable to their family and friends.

Similarly, every patient’s recovery experience is different. Most patients will experience the majority of their recovery within the first week. If the bones have been reset there will be swelling and bruising that can persist for 2-3 weeks. Some patients report a feeling of pressure during recovery, but not a level of pain that requires more than over-the-counter pain medication. There may be splints inside the nose that add to the pressure sensation, but they will be removed at the first postoperative visit. Patients who have made extensive changes to the tip of their nose may not see the full results until one year after surgery. Other patients will notice improvement right away.
